The Gold King is an eight-episode historical drama chronicling the epic life of Fredrik Bruseth — a poor Norwegian farm boy who rises to riches in the Klondike Gold Rush, only to face charges of treason decades later. Told through a frame narrative set in 1945, Fredrik is interrogated by Olav, a postwar official determined to uncover the truth about Fredrik’s ties to Nazi collaborators during WWII.
As Fredrik recounts his journey, we see his transformation from an idealistic young man to a successful industrialist who builds a fortune in the Yukon, returns to Norway a hero, and becomes a pillar of society. Yet beneath this success lies tragedy, including the death of his beloved sister Marie and his controversial marriage to her daughter, Molla — who may also be considered his child.
The series explores themes of ambition, loyalty, love, memory, and moral ambiguity. Through shifting timelines, it paints a complex portrait of a man whose past glories are overshadowed by his political choices. By the series' end, Fredrik’s wealth, reputation, and legacy are put on trial — raising timeless questions about patriotism, responsibility, and the cost of silence.
